Second Floor Renovation Project
As part of our strategic plan, the library is planning a 2026 renovation of the second floor to create a more user-friendly space that better serves patrons. The second floor was originally added in 2004, followed by the addition of seven new study rooms in 2016. Since then, patron use has continued to grow, often resulting in limited space availability during peak hours.
The upcoming renovation will enhance wayfinding and preserve clearly defined areas for both collaborative activities and quieter individual use, including casual reading.
Planned updates include:
- Expanded teen spaces to create more opportunities for study, collaboration, and meet-ups.
- Additional study and meeting rooms for adults, with both individual and group spaces, plus new personal work pods.
- A new technology lab designed for programs as well as quiet individual use.
- Relocated public service desks to improve accessibility.
- A new genealogy area, relocated to a quieter space.
- A new quiet reading area.
As part of this project, the library’s collections will be rebalanced, with expanded teen, world language, large type and fiction sections.
In addition to updating spaces, the project also includes upgrading all lighting in the building to modern, energy-efficient LED technology to reduce energy consumption and create a brighter, more sustainable environment. This component is in line with the goals of the Illinois Clean Lighting Act.
The estimated project cost is approximately $5 million and will be funded through the library’s Capital Projects Fund, Gift Fund, as well as grants and donations. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026 and is expected to be complete by the fall. Work will be completed in phases to keep the second floor open during construction and minimize service disruptions.
