Read for Your Rights
The library supports and celebrates the right of everyone to choose what they read, without restriction. Individuals have the right to choose, for themselves and their families, books from all points of view. This freedom to read is guaranteed by the U.S. constitution.
How do challenges to book titles limit reading freedom?
Although books are often challenged with the belief that removing a title from a collection will protect people from difficult ideas or information, book challenges and bans are a form of censorship. Banning books keeps materials away from others that might need or want to read them and limits access to different perspectives.
Why is it so important to allow people to choose what they read?
Choice is a motivator. Having a wide range of titles encourages reading, and allowing readers to choose their own books increases engagement with the material.
Reading is personal. Because readers bring their own life experiences and feelings to what they read, it’s important for libraries to offer books that reflect diverse identities and stories.
At the same time, reading is a window into lives and worlds different from one’s own which can prepare individuals to engage thoughtfully in a diverse world. Intentionally choosing stories that are diverse and complex exposes readers to characters, places, experiences, and viewpoints they might not otherwise know. Reading different perspectives and expanding one’s understanding promotes critical thinking and can challenge biases, fostering empathy and encouraging personal growth.
