Big improvements coming to our second floor!
Based on community feedback and data about how our library collection is used, we are renovating the second floor of the Main Library to create enhanced spaces for studying, collaborating, and exploring technology. This project will deliver additional adult study rooms, new spaces for teens, a dedicated tech lab, a quiet reading area, and more comfortable places to work, read, and connect.

Funding for the estimated $4.8 million project will come from the library’s Capital Projects Fund, grants, and private donations, including a contribution from the Friends of the Mount Prospect Public Library.

FAQ
Why is the second floor being renovated?
We are renovating the second floor as part of our strategic plan to create a more user-friendly space that better serves our patrons. The second floor was added to our building over 20 years ago and the way our community uses the library has changed. We’ve seen our study room usage quadruple over the past four years alone.
We’re creating more welcoming, flexible, and functional spaces by expanding our teen areas, adding a technology lab for programs and individual use, and creating more quiet reading and study spaces. Once complete, the second floor will be more energy efficient and easier to navigate, designed so that you can find the resources and spaces you need.
How long will the project last?
To minimize disruption, construction will be done in phases and will begin in February 2026. The project is expected to be finished by late September 2026.
Will the library stay open?
Yes, the library will remain open throughout the renovation, although access to areas will vary during the project. We’ll have signage posted and staff available to help you get what you need. There will be a two- to three-week period during May/June when then second floor will be inaccessible.
Will there be noise or disruptions?
Some noise is unavoidable, but our goal is to minimize any disruptions by doing the loudest work outside open hours whenever possible.
