In honor of the impending blizzard–my review of Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

[Don’t worry Shiver is not a book about being cold, the snow, or anything else related to winter weather.]

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

I can confidently say that if you are a fan of Twilight, then this book is for you.  Stiefvater has combined a beautiful love story filled with longing and the supernatural with an interesting new take on the werewolf myth.  At 392 pages, the plot moves along at a perfect speed, conveying the deepest emotions as well as staying action packed.  Shiver is so well written that by the end of the book you are left satisfied but wanting more (which I think is the mark of a really good book).

Here’s my summary: Grace was savagely attacked by a pack of wolves when she was a young girl.  Having survived the attack, Grace has grown up not fearing, but obsessed with the pack of wolves that live in the woods behind her house.  Specifically, Grace is obsessed with her yellow eyed wolf, the wolf that saved her when she was attacked.  Grace and her wolf have grown up together, spending their winters together and their summers apart.

Sam is the yellow eyed wolf who is becoming more wolf than human with each passing year.  Sam has always been connected to Grace and clings to her as his last link to humanity.  Sam was also attacked by a wolf as a young boy, but he turned a half human half wolf from the bite and has been waiting for years for the same thing to happen to Grace.  The wolf pack that Sam belongs to change to wolf when the winter comes, but when the weather is warmer they are free to be human.

A fellow classmate is attacked and killed by what appears to be wolves, and the pack that live in the woods behind Grace’s house are hunted down.  When Sam is shot in the hunt he runs to Grace’s back step, turning human as he lay dying.  What follows is an amazing love story, told in the alternating voices of Grace and Sam, as they fight to keep Sam human as winter approaches.

I have also read the sequel to Shiver, Linger, and I have to say it was also awesome!  Stiefvater has added a new character, Cole, to Sam and Grace’s story.  I really liked the addition of Cole, and he has a really great back story. I am so looking forward to the third book–Forever.
