Writing a resume with help from library resources

Changes in the labor market mean that many people are looking for a new job or transitioning to a new industry. Getting started with writing a new resume can be overwhelming, and MPPL cardholders have access to some helpful online resources to support resume and cover letter writing: 

Adult_Career_Center_wr_iconAdult Career Center from Tutor.com – Not just for students, job seekers can get support from Tutor.com in resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation and more. MPPL cardholders can access five free online sessions with a qualified career coach every week. Live sessions are available 2 – 9 p.m. CST. Additionally, resume and cover letter review is available with a 12-hour turnaround.

Testing_and_education_IconGale Presents: Peterson’s Test and Career Prep – Under the “Explore Career” tab, this database includes a robust resume and cover letter builder, skills assessments, and additional career development tools.

 

LinkedIn_Learning_IconLinkedIn Learning – High-quality and in-depth, these courses include valuable information about best practices in resume writing in a variety of situations, including switching fields and returning to work after a prolonged absence. 

 

There are also many books to support job searching and career transitions, available from the library.

MPPL is losing access to Creativebug

Mount Prospect Public Library will no longer have a subscription to the web resource Creativebug after June 30. If you are interested in learning how to knit, sew, bake, draw, or any number of other crafts, you might enjoy Gale Presents: Udemy. It also has computer skills, office management, guitar and foreign language courses, all for free with your library card.

Minding your money with library resources

There is a lot of economic news to keep track of these days. If you’ve got your mind on your money, the library has some helpful resources to put those economic indicators in perspective. 

These databases are freely available from any public computer in the library, or from home with your library card. 

Value_Line_wr_iconValueline: This investment research service creates reports on stocks and mutual funds, including their popular one-page reports.  

 

Morningstar_wr_iconMorningstar: The premier source for mutual fund information, Morningstar is known for their comprehensive star ranking system.  

 

weiss iconFinancial Ratings Series Online (Weiss): Find information about investments as well as ratings for banks, credit unions, Medigap plans, and much more.

O’Reilly offers new business and technology titles

A new and notable web resource is available for patrons to use at the library or from home with their library card.
O’Reilly for Public Libraries offers current and popular titles in the fields of technology and business. Patrons looking to expand their technical and career skills will be particularly interested in checking out this resource.    

The collection, which features more than 50,000 e-books and 30,000 hours of video, can only be viewed through the O’Reilly for Public Libraries website.


O'Reilly Playlists

Included in the collection of titles is most of the popular “For Dummies” series. Looking for a deeper dive in to a specific topic, such as Blockchain or Business Strategy? O’Reilly for Public Libraries offers expert-curated playlists on subject including machine learning, cloud computing and software architecture.
