Spanish Language Resources and Tools from the CFPB

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2018, the Hispanic population in the U.S. was made up of just under 60 million people, or nearly one-fifth of the nation’s population. The Consumer Financial protection Bureau (CFPB) has a selection of financial education tools and resources for our nation’s diverse Hispanic and Latino community that are available in both English and Spanish. It recognizes the great variation in the needs, interests, and financial well-being of Hispanic and Latino households. Its resources are intended to be useful for individuals and families during many different stages of their economic life, as they pursue the goals and aspirations that are important to them.

Announcing Rosetta Stone

I am pleased to announce MPPL now has a subscription to the well-known language learning resource, Rosetta Stone Library Solutions. This package features all 30 languages with all levels available to you. From experience, this resource works best an app on a mobile device though is still effective on a desktop computer if you have a microphone. There is a trick to opening the app after you have downloaded it so please read the instructions on our Library Apps webpage. You’ll get the hang of it because the steps should be easy for anyone with the motivation to learn a new language.

Introducing Mango Premier

Mango Languages has added a layer to its unique language learning program. If you are studying Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, or English for Spanish Speakers you will have added courses that involve watching foreign films. You can watch the movie all the way through reading subtitles in English, the original language, both at the same time, or your own comprehension. You can be more engaged in the “Engaged Mode”. You will be prepped with a scene instruction and find a list of words you will encounter.

Mango Languages

Did you know we have a fun, fast and easy language learning program called Mango Languages?  The best part it is free for Mount Prospect patrons and you can access it anywhere there is Internet with you library card. Mango is the easiest and most effective way to learn to speak a foreign language.  Mango is available in two versions:

Mango Basic:

Perfect for a foreign language beginner, Mango Basic teaches everyday greetings, gratitudes, goodbyes and helpful phrases in a short period of time.  The courses, which require only two to five hours of time to complete, are currently available in 22 foreign languages and 14 English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.

Mango Complete:

Mango Complete offers a 100-lesson course that digs much deeper and is designed to provide a more complete understanding of the entire language and culture. It is available in nine foreign language and three ESL courses. Foreign language courses include Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.  ESL courses include Polish, Spanish and Portuguese.
